GDragon's Coup d'état

GDragon is once again back with a solo album ''Coup d'état''. This album goes into the same crazy direction he always goes. It features many American artists such a Missy Elliott and of course is produced mostly by GD himself.

His title song ''Coup détat'' is a pretty dark and creepy song!! Of course we have his typical rap in this song, but there is a kind of sing/ rap that sounds pretty creepy and strange.. There's dubstep and rock mixed in this song and it's just a clash of genres with that steady dark undertone.
I want to mention that I'm in no way a specialist in reviewing music or videos. I mostly listen to it/ watch the videos because I enjoy it, without being able to really interpret something. I maybe try to do that from time to time or make fun of it, but I'm no professional. Long talking short: This means I'm not able to do a deep interpretation of the song and video of ''Coup d'état''. But hey, I still want to talk about it and I will try to review it!!

At first we see a person (GD) lying on the ground. He is dirty and doesn't look really healthy. He looks weak and ill.

Then we see GD in a sort of tower. Above him is a  heavy ball that clashed against the walls. It's tight on a rope though, so it looks like a ticking clock or something(?).

Then we see a little boy standing in front of a grave (?). I guess it's the little GD..

Then there are these weird women behind the trees.

GD is shot. He is dying!

GD is slowly dying with his fans around him while he himself is alone in a studio (?). They don't seem to notice how he feels.

Here we see a weird women that's far from GD. Perhaps his old love?

The fruits are falling down and don't seem too healthy..

This scene I don't really understand.. What is he cooking? Money?

Here he is all crazy and psycho. He is surrounded by clothes in a dressing room and the fame makes him crazy.

Here we see GD has many faces.

In the background is the face he has to show everyone, which makes him sad because it's not the real self..

Here we see the netizens and reporters who make his life really hard and don't want to see the truth (their eyes are covered).

All this leds to him slowly dying, already being surrounded by craws.

He is sad and begins to cry. This is actually his ''Heartbreaker'' mask..

..which really is just a MASK!! Under that is his real face, that's actually pretty dark and not as pure and happy as we would think..

His face is broken so he is now really dead.

But the weak GD from the beginning rises again...

..and GD begins to scream and wants to change his destiny!!

He throws a stone against the walls..

..and frees himself from the skin he was in before..

The stone breaks into the wall..

.. and makes the way for a new GD with shorter hair and proper clothes!

He is now stronger as ever, being a ninja!!

The video ends with his album cover!!

The video of this song is really deep and it's hard to understand everything at once! I think everything that happens in this video happpens in GD! He is surrounded by his fans, by the reporters and everyone else and has to show a kind of mask. The truth is that he is different and wants to be himself. He slowly gives up/ dies but in the end he gets up again and transforms into a new person!! There are still many more hidden symbols (like the red ladies and the black woman) but I think that is the main story!

Even though it is pretty creepy, it is a really good video with a deep message. I really like dark videos because they tell so much more about the downs in life that happen to everyone and are more deeper than other videos. I'm happy that GD is who he wants to be and that he can express himself like that!!

Kind of like a similiar song and video is his song ''Crooked''. No these two aren't thaaaat similiar. ''Crooked'' is a lot more lighthearted and not as creepy and dark as ''Coup d'état''. It reminds me of some older Big Bang songs!! Well, the song is still pretty serious and concerned!

In the video, we first see GD walking through different streets. He seems down!

GD is running away from something and looks angry and sad.

Then we see him being at a party with some other people..

But in the next scene he's alone in his room and looks not happy at all!

GD lingers in the streets..

And also in the tunnels.

He gets angry pretty fast and fights with random people. Well, I'm sure something is wrong with him..

GD looks even sadder in these shots and doesn't seem to like his life..

.. so he goes to all these parties and tries to forget his feelings..

But he can't hold them back anymore and lets them free.

GD wants to go to even more parties!

He wants to be perfect!!

GD goes and destrois things..

Now he's exhausted!

GD goes trough his life like he's drunk all the time. He doesn't want to feel anymore and is depressive!

He starts to cry at the toilet!!

He cries and cries. He's down and helplessly runs through his life!

GD screams to let his feeling out..

.. but in the end he falls down at a party!

This video is pretty depressive. We see GD running through his life without a goal and without thinking. He tries to forget his sad feelings with all the parties, but in the end he breaks down. Even though this video isn't as symbolic as ''Coup d'état'', it's still pretty deep and shows what everyone could go through. Everyone has bad times in life, there are ups and downs for everyone!

I enjoy this song/ video also very much. But I think together with the video it is more depressive than ''Coup d'état'', where GD actually changes in the end and grows stronger. Here he simply breaks down and doesn't feel anything anymore! I actually like both songs very much!

But I have to say one thing: As symbolic and deep his videos and songs may be, my interest in him is a bit declining. He seems so.. different. Which is good of course. I like how he's so different than the other korean starts. But he seems so far away now... I'm not as big as a fan as I was 1 year ago (I digged Crayon!!!). Well, that doesn't mean I'm not a big fan anymore!! Oh no, I still AM a fan and I was really anticipating his comeback and are looking forward to his other activities. And yeah, his comeback was HUGE!!
